Supply of Custom Colourway for Curtains
‘We didn’t want the curtains to impose but we wanted them to be exquisite’ - Henry Miller Robinson, Founder of K&H Design
Answering The Brief
Working with Henry, he wanted to incorporate shades from a large landscape oil painting which was the starting point for the bespoke colouring process. He also wanted to layer the room with newly crafted pieces and he had the idea of ‘hand-smocking’ the curtain headings to give this very distinctive embroidered look.
Design Process
Henry chose Asta from our panel collection, this design features a running stitch pattern and is woven on a jacquard loom in a mix of wool and cotton on a silk warp. The design lends itself to the ‘smocked heading’ as there is an area of plain above and below the motif which doesn’t fight with the embroidered technique. Working with other elements in the room, the fabric was re-coloured in an earthy palette which included our colours Rustic, Parchment, Maple, Ripple and Natural. Henry was able to work with his curtain maker to ascertain the most effective position for the design to appear on the 3m drop, taking into consideration the rest of the furniture and the scale of the room.
The Specification
The fabric was woven at our mill in Suffolk and then each panel was joined together by the curtain maker. We were also able to supply a cone of the same cotton colour used in the weaving to carry out the hand smocked heading. There was no additional sewing as the design motif is already seamlessly woven into the design. Two scatter cushions were also custom coloured in our ‘Zaire’ fabric. We swapped the 100% silk design to incorporate linen in the ground to give more textural contrast.
All the fabric was dyed and woven in England with a lead time of 4 weeks. Bespoke samples were turned around in 2 weeks.
Conclusion
By working with custom colours and in using one of our panel designs, Henry was able to respond to his original brief without having to compromise on either colour or design. He was able to base the colour scheme around items already in the room. We delivered this on time and on budget. All our fabrics are woven in England so we have no summer shut down. We also have the added advantage of weaving to order so none of our colours or designs go out of stock and can be re-ordered. The minimum order is 10m for panel designs.
