Supply of Custom Fabric for Walling & Tented Ceiling

Answering The Brief

MBDS was asked to refresh the statement stripe fabric which features in the entranceway of this iconic club. The fabric is used for wall panelling in the stairwell and for a draped ‘tented’ ceiling.

The original fabric was displaying signs of wear; the brief was to recreate the stripe, using a similar bold colour palette. It was to be woven in silk and custom coloured to complement the colour palette of the carpet, woodwork and existing brass fittings.

Design Process

Working from a swatch of the original fabric, our design studio replicated the stripe dimensions. A satin weave was used in the ground, contrasting with a twill in the stripes for textural interest.

We then wove a number of custom colour samples working to the client’s palette. Our silk shade range is extensive, so colour matching was not a problem. The designer settled on a vibrant combination of colours Oakapple, Madras, Pearl, Almond and Daffodil. These showed off the natural lustre of the silk to full effect; the result is a fittingly opulent fabric to welcome guests to the club.

The Specification

The fabric was woven at a renowned silk mill in Suffolk using the finest quality silk weft yarn on a high density 200 Ends per inch silk warp. The upholsterer then expertly stretched the fabric onto panels to line the walls of the staircase; it was also gathered to create the ‘tented’ ceiling drapery in the lightwell.

To meet the fire safety requirements of this hospitality setting, the fabric was treated to standard BS 476 Class O. Certification was provided along with a cleaning and maintenance manual. In this instance the client opted for a 100% silk fabric which was fire treated post-weaving, however we can also provide inherently fire retardant fabrics woven in a Trevira CS quality.

All the fabric was dyed and woven in England with a lead time of 4 weeks. Bespoke samples were turned around in 2 weeks. Fire treatment requires 10 days.

Conclusion

By utilising our custom design and colouring service, the designer was able to meet the very specific requirements of the client. Our fabric finishing service allowed him to use a silk quality which best fitted the brief, whilst still meeting the FR regulations. We delivered the order on time and on budget. Our fabrics are woven in England which gives us greater control through all stages of production. We have the added advantage of weaving to order so none of our colours or designs are discontinued and can be re-ordered. The minimum order is 10 metres.
